This is a re-posting from the obsoleted (October 2018) "Schneider Electric Telemetry & SCADA" forum.
It is sometimes necessary to get the greatest possible speed from a radio system. This may be to pass video, or perhaps to do a "no holds barred" bandwidth test. Here are certain suggestions which can help you get the greatest throughput from your system in such cases._**
- Set the Radio Data Rate (over the air speed) to the radio's highest setting, 512k in the J Series or 256k in the K Series. Be aware that the radio's receiver is at its least sensitive at this point, thus range is less than at slower speeds.
- PTMP networks are somewhat faster if data is being pushed up from Remote to Master. PTP networks split the available bandwidth 50/50 between Access Point & Remote.
- Compression will typically only help with video or audio data, not random or SCADA type data. Turning it on when not needed will add some workload to the CPU and may increase latency slightly.
- Longer hopping intervals are more efficient - if doing bandwidth testing use 250 ms. Be aware that this speed is least resistant to interference.
- To minimize redundancy set Data Retransmissions to 0. A value of 1 or greater improves the odds of the master's messages being heard but reduces available bandwidth.
- Ensure Sleep mode is Disabled.
- No Ack Retry Limit can typically be left at the default, as on a good path there should be very few retries.
- Disable Peer to Peer Repeat as it cuts throughput by 50%
- Disable Digital Collision Avoidance as it adds a small latency (delay) while the Remote asks permission to send its data
- Ensure the radios are not "shouting" at each other. If they are close together using whip antennas, set transmit power to the lowest setting of 10 dBm. High transmit power when the radios are very close will cause distortion which may force retries.
- As always, ensure the radios are connected to good quality power supplies capable of providing greater than 500 mA at 12 volts. Also ensure that antennas designed for 900 MHz are connected.
