Hello - from what I understand, there are two types of sleep on a Mac. If the UPS goes to battery, depending on the type of sleep mode (CPU still powered or not), the Mac might not see the change in state (online to on battery) and thus would not shutdown gracefully for sleep mode. Someone told me we used to recommend disabling sleep to avoid this but I am not sure how realistic that it is. It might be good to just test this out while your computer is in sleep mode to verify the behavior is what it should be for your situation.
And yes, the Back UPS product lines have surge protection.
