Is this AP9606 dying a slow death?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 9/18/2010

I have 2 SmartUPS each with a AP9606 card. After years of flawless service, recently one of them has started sending communication problem and warmstart massages:

UPS: Communications lost.
System: Warmstart.
UPS: Communications established.
UPS: Communications lost.
UPS: Communications established.
System: Warmstart.
UPS: Communications established.

The AP9606 card has the latest firmware:

American Power Conversion Web/SNMP Management Card AOS v3.2.6.b
(c) Copyright 2000 All Rights Reserved Smart-UPS & Matrix-UPS APP v3.2.6.a

Does anyone have any pointers?

Is the AP9606 card failing?

APC network cards will do warmstarts if they lose contact with the gateway...this is their attempt to re-establish communicaitons. Could be something as simple as oxidation on the RJ-45 connections to the card or at the network switch port. These cards being over 10 years old now could actually be deteriorating due to being inside the warm inards of the ups (if they are in a smartslot) where temperatures can exceed 35 celcius ...capacitors on the pc boards can dry up and cause weird problems. If it isn't a connectivity problem I would spring for a replacement AP9630 or AP9631 if I were you, then you will get the latest security (SSH/SSL) and data logging which the 9606's lack.

Good luck!

Dave

which UPS is it installed in exactly? have you tried to swap the card to a different UPS? the card could be warmstarting because it is losing communication. a communication loss could be the result of a failing card or a faulty smart slot in the UPS. i would suggest moving this card to see if the issue follows the card. if so, yes, it appears a replacement card may be needed.
