I have received a few UPSs and I plugged them in but they didn't seem to power on. My question is this, do they need batteries in them to even power on? I plugged them in and there was no response to button presses or anything. The models that I have are SmartUPS 700 and SmartUPS1000. I think they are older ones and they are white, not the black newer ones. Thank you for your time.

SMT does not, I can at least confirm that!

Depends on the exact model. If the model starts with SUA, then it needs a good battery. SMX, SMT, and I think SMC do not.
