ION9000 Waveform capture

in the ION9000 FAQ about waveform capture:

:

Question: What is the bandwidth of a captured waveform?
Answer:The ION9000 introduces “extended waveform capture” that allows up to 30 cycles of pre-event waveform records at 1024 and 30 cycles of event data.  This waveform recorder can then be retriggered to extend the waveform for up to 180 cycles. It can then re-trigger that capture for a user defined number of captures limited by memory which is 2Gb for ION9000.

How is this implemented. I checked the WaveformRec module, I don't know how to implement this witout potiential gap between each capture.

My customer is buying 15 of this meters and wanted to be 100% sure that they can have long period of waveform capture when they have PQ issue (like over few seconds to a minute).

Here is what in the meter datasheet:

Simultaneous capture of voltage and current channels, sub-cycle disturbance captures of 180-cycles @ 1,024
samples/cycle to 7,200-cycles @ 16 sample/cycle, retriggerable.

I don't understand how this is implemenbted either.

Can someone please explain to me in tech detail?

Thanks,

Rongjun Yao

Re: ION9000 Waveform capture

Hi Rongjun,

The answer depends - yes you can configure some of the waveform modules to capture 128 samples per cycle for 1200 cycles. You can't configure all of them this way however, since this high-speed capture configuration allocates the meter's buffer memory.

With the default 2.0.0 PQ framework on the ION9000, I would estimate you could set 4 modules this way before you would consume the available buffer memory in the default configuration.

To walk through the example for everyone’s benefit:
To setup this configuration, set the waveform recorder modules' format to 128x14, giving you 14 cycles per record at 128 samples per cycle. To capture 1200 cycles, you want to capture 1200 / 14 = 86 records (rounded up). In pre/ post mode, when the module is triggered, records are captured in sets: where the size of the set is (Pre records + Post records + 1). So for your specific case, there is one record created on the trigger, so to get the other 85 records, the pre + post record count should add to 85.
Set the buffer depth to 86 records (this is the meter's 'buffer memory' that is used by this configuration)
Set the Depth to be any multiple of 86, depending on how many 1200 cycle 'sets' you want to store in Non-volatile memory.

I hope this helps.

Cliff

Re: ION9000 Waveform capture

The user manual shows how to configure the waveform recorder to cover a long interval using pre and post trigger events on page 197.

Re: ION9000 Waveform capture

Hi Brian:

Thank you very much for the information, but I am still confused. So let me be straight, I have a customer is buying 15 of this kind of meters, they need high resilution 128 samples per cycle and 1200 cycles. Can this meter do it?

The manual is confusing, on page 143, it staed that:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The maximum number of cycles (pre-event + post-event) cannot
exceed the total number of cycles in the waveform format.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Then on page 157, one critical piece information is left out. If pre-event and post-event are not included in the Waveform Format, what is the resolution?

Can you help me on this?

Thanks,

Rongjun Yao

Re: ION9000 Waveform capture

"The maximum number of cycles (pre-event + post-event) cannot exceed the total number of cycles in the waveform format."

I believe that is because "The Sag/Swell Logging Wizard does not support Extended waveform capture."

You could find this note in the same page of the ION9000 manual

Re: ION9000 Waveform capture

Hi Cliff:

Thank you very much for the explanation. That's exactly what I was looking for. Just one more point, to use ION9000 extended waveform capture, we need use PME9.0.

Thanks,

Rongjun Yao
