In our ION Device Template Reference, it list the module counts for ION meters, it also mentioned that some of the modules is high speed, which updates half a cycle, some others are low speed, which updates every 1 seconds, and lots of modules are low speed/high speed. What does it mean? I am trying to send out a very short pulse that trigger by Vista using External Pulse module in a ION8500 meter. we got it working, but the high speed, low speed and high speed/low speed is confusing me.
Some ION modules are exclusively high speed, others exclusively low speed and the remainder will automatically switch based on the inputs to the module.
For the automatically switching modules the speed of the module is typically based on the calculation speed of registers connected to the inputs (actually the calculation speed of the module that owns those registers). If an input to a module is calculated at high speed (one of 1/2, 1 or 4 cycles depending on the device type) then that module will most likely also be high speed.
The high speed/low speed is the way to reduce the amount of CPU cycles required for some modules and thus allow you to have more modules on the device active at the same time. Some modules are quite complex internally and can consume a lot of CPU cycles - running these once a second vs 120 times second makes a big difference. 🙂
