Battery Monitoring through the AIO Module for ION9000, ION7400, PM8000

Currently most generator battery monitoring solutions requires a V4 voltage input for capturing the battery voltage waveform.  Since the waveform capture on the meter does not remove DC from the voltage input signal, this can be compared against known good reference waveforms in software to develop reports on the differences as seen in our user manuals below.

Originally limited to the ION7650, ION7550, and ION9000, there now exists an alternate solution using the AIO module (METSEPM89M0024) to expand this functionality to the PM8000 and ION7400 (or even on the ION9000 if V4 is already in use).

The Analog Input modules can be set to “Voltage” mode to monitor up to 4 battery sources per module (up to a maximum of 16) on a single meter!  Each analogue input is sampled every ½ cycle (120Hz for 60Hz systems) and are rated up to 30VDC solution

This provides an array of benefits:

  • Battery is electrically isolated from meter voltage measurement inputs to simplify installation
  • Each AIO module contains 4 analog inputs and each meter can support up to 4 modules
  • Higher accuracy, true DC voltage measurement; 0.3% full scale vs current un-calibrated method
  • No need for an additional digital input to initiate data capture as a set-point module can be used

Setting up the AIO module is simple to allow for basic high-speed ( ½ cycle) logging of the V Batt

This can be further explored to do more using the set-point module to trigger pre-event and post-event data that can be translated into “waveform-like” data.

See the example below used by one of our colleagues to monitor the starter on his motorcycle.  He was able to generate a graph from the data logged in the data-recorder using the burst logging as found in the pre/post-event data capture:

Do more with your meter!

Re: Battery Monitoring through the AIO Module for ION9000, ION7400, PM8000

Hello Jeffrey,

Currently, the EPSS report will look in the waveofrmlog2 table in the database for the V4 waveform. With the above configuration, the logging is done in a data recorder that logs the data to Datalog2. So correct, currently not something that can be done with the report as it is currently designed.

Will this always be the case: unknown, are there workarounds: possibly but I personally do not know them.

Regards,

Charles

P.S. Note that the ION9000 meter does have a V4 connection, this setup is more for PM8000 or ION, but could be done with ION9000 if additional sources were desired.

is it possible to use this with the PME reports?  it was possible with the 7650

You should definitely post the ION Framework for this above. Only makes sense.

Re: Battery Monitoring through the AIO Module for ION9000, ION7400, PM8000

Is this  possibel to measure the true RMS DC voltage. We tried or with pm8000 and AI but the flinke tree RMS meter is giving different voltage....

We need  to measure on red circle

below 0-35V Dc

Re: Battery Monitoring through the AIO Module for ION9000, ION7400, PM8000

The data recorded by the meter is not in a waveform format as the report would expect. It is possible to trend this data using Diagrams/Vista or exporting the data to Excel.

Charles are you saying this would not be a alternate option, instead of using the V4 connection for EPSS Battery Monitoring waveform report?
