EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert 3 | Server Tour

In this new episode of Geo SCADA tutorials, @sbeadle will describe the server tools for control, monitoring, and setup.

This video covers the main features of the Geo SCADA Expert - Database Server and its configuration.

In brief, the main features are as follows:

  • Installed as a Service on a computer
  • In the Windows Services list
  • Service Manager App lists related ClearSCADA or Geo SCADA services, equivalent to control from the Windows Services list
  • Server icon: used to start and stop the server
  • Useful tools available on the Server Icon, Start Menu and ViewX ribbon (2019 and newer)
  • Double-click or right click 'Status' to get the Server Status tool. This tool has many diagnostics to help you maintain the system effectively.
  • Log in to a server with an administrator username and password. This tool can be used remotely from the server if required, with a Geo SCADA Expert/ClearSCADA admin account
  • Information page: displays server version, status, ports and the licensing usage
  • Modules page: displays installed and operational drivers with protocol logging controls
  • Server Logging page: controls for turning logging types on, off, or to the default set
  • Database Lock Diagnostics: a detailed view of system activity, displays who is logged on and where
  • Standby Links page: show synchronisation state and percentages complete of redundant servers
  • Historic Historian page: displays the quantity of historian data, and how much data is waiting to be written to the disks, with indication of wayward configuration causing excessive data logging
  • Right click the server icon and click Configuration to get the Server Configuration tool, displaying server properties such as how long to store historic data, and redundant servers
  • Login as an Administrator: the settings are stored in the Windows Registry, which can also be viewed in this tool
  • In Database Configuration, alarm severities can be changed, adding new, colours, allowed actions etc.
  • In Historic Configuration, Alarm Summary history feature, can be enabled
  • Enable the Configuration Changes history feature and add to the storage duration for any, including the main Historic Data historian.
  • In System Configuration | Partners, add a fully synchronised standby server. Specify the type, and the address of partner servers, for each server
  • Redundancy enabled simply by adding a single computer address
  • When changes are finished, click File | Save. If the server needs to be restarted, it will tell you

Finally, just a hint at some of the other server-related tools for future videos:

  • Right Click the server icon and select Licensing to see and enter license data
  • Right Click the server icon to see log files for the server, to send to support if you need server help
  • In Program Files, click Server Manager to add more server instances to this Windows host
  • In Program Files, although not a server tool, the Configure Connections utility allows client applications such as the Server Status, Server Configuration and ViewX all to connect to one or more servers. This allows each System to be set up, which may have one or more servers each, as connection points for the different types of client. Settings on the connection will control the prioritisation to each server and for each system.
