Trying to find out how this works. Have a travel trailer with 12v battery. Hooking up a 5500W generator. Will this overcharge the battery if left running too long? And how long is too long?

The wattage of your generator has nothing to do with it. Your generator must have a 12 volt output and should be regulated to not more than 14 volts. This way you will not overcharge your battery.
