I'm looking to provide extended runtime for a thin client and a small lcd monitor.....total draw would be less than 50w, actually closer 40w. I'm looking to achieve 3+ hours of runtime......can I just simply buy a higher output ups for this need or are there any gotchas I'm not aware of? Any advice is welcome.

yeah, you could just buy a little bigger UPS so the lesser the load, the higher the runtime. i am not sure if you are looking at a Back UPS or Smart UPS model but you will just want to make sure if this client is server class, that you buy a Smart UPS or something else that provides a pure sinewave output, if this device requires it. A Back UPS outputs a step approximated sinewave which some equipment does not like. They also have higher transfer times to battery.
also, do you have any requirements such as software integration for graceful shutdown or being rackmountable, etc?
