Hi Todd,
If you want to know the total value of the power used in a row of racks but have only individual rack PDUs, you can add up all the total power values to get a row value or even a full room value. For averages, perhaps you want to know the average temperature in the room or between racks so you can compare the average to some of the outliers.
This is simply the idea behind the design and I'll defer to others that may be reading in case they have these virtual sensors set up in a live data center for other purposes.

In DCO - Struxureware automatically sums multiple PDUs that are assigned to a cabinet - because we all know that the TOTAL of the 2 is what is important.
Unfortunately - DCO doesn't pass this, or anything at all, back to DCE.
So, in order to monitor the safe maximum load in a cabinet - I create a virtual sensor that contains the PDUs in a cabinet - the watts or kilowatts sensors.
Then I can set alarm levels and run reports on the virtual - this way it doesn't matter how the power is distributed. It could be 75%/25% which would normally trip alarms if monitored independently.
The problem with virtual sensors is trying to delete them. Its annoying.
Example chart attached - this is 4 virtual sensors that combine 2 PDUs into each of these graph lines. For reference - these PDUs are safe up to 5.7kW and my alarms are set at 5.2kW
