NetBotz 250 MAC Address Configuration

This question was originally posted on DCIM Support by Raphael FLAMENBAUM on 2020-01-15

Hello everyone,

I have a NetBotz in a local network. This NetBotz is connected to a Switch which possesses a statically defined IP/MAC table. This table is static to ensure the security of the system.

Switch and NetBotz are not in the same location.

Hence, whenever a NetBotz needs to be replaced, it would be easier and preferred to change its MAC addresss to correspond to the one allocated to the previous NetBotz so the Switch configuration will not be modified. Therefore, the replacement will be efficient and cost-effective.

How can I modify the MAC address of the Rack Monitor NetBotz 250 ?

Thank you in advance.

Best Regards,

Raphaël

Dear Raphael FLAMENBAUM

As far as I know, this is impossible and it is very correct. Since the MAC address of any network device is its unique identifier, which is flashed at the factory and absolutely cannot be changed (of course, exceptions are possible).

Hence, whenever a NetBotz needs to be replaced, it would be easier and preferred to change its MAC addresss to correspond to the one allocated to the previous NetBotz so the Switch configuration will not be modified. Therefore, the replacement will be efficient and cost-effective.

Sorry, I have to disagree with you: maybe it is easier for you (or maybe NOC staff?), but this is wrong from the point of view of network security. Therefore, if you are replacing a network device, that is tied to the network switch/router by your MAC address (i.e. switchport port-security mac-address ...), please make the appropriate changes on the network switch/router side.

With respect.

Thank you for your answer.

You corroborate the fact that it is impossible to change the MAC address of the NetBotz 250.

Thank you for your answer.
