How to read temperature from AP8881 (APC PDU) in DCE?

This question was originally posted on DCIM Support by Zenon Ruta on 2019-10-27

I use a DCE 7.2 version, and last time we bought new APC PDU AP8881 with temperature sensors (AP9335T). I can read a temperature when I connect by a WEB browser, but when I add this PDU to the DCE server I can't read a temperature.

What I must to do to read a temperature in DCE?

Dear Zenon Ruta,

This is very strange, since everything should work by default, i.e. as soon as you make a discovering above the indicated =SE= rPDU with the climate sensor in DCE software, you should see its readings (temperature (and humidity, for AP9335TH). This should work even if you have a very outdated version of DCE-7.2 (the latest is DCE-7.7.1).

Can we know the firmware versions on your rPDU, as well as see screenshots from the rPDU web-GUI and from the DCE-client?

With respect.

Hi Zenon,

it’s likely just due to 7.2 and it’s older DDF files. The first thing I’d suggest is backing up the server and contacting support to get upgrades.  If you don’t want to upgrade just now, you can go to DCEs SNMP device menu and on the DDF tab, there is an option to have DCE connect to the web and download the latest DDF files.

thanks,

Steve.

Thanks, but unfortunately, our DCE system can not establish connection outside the internal network (network security).

How can I download a DDF file for new PDU AP8881?

Best Regards

Hi,

At the top of this page, you should see a "DDF" link. You can probably find the APC PDU DDF there but others may be required. You can usually get the file here too but something seems broken at the moment:

https://sxwhelpcenter.ecostruxureit.com/display/download/DCE+device+firmware+catalog

Again, I suggest getting up to date with the version of DCE to avoid other issues.

DCE Ve 7.2 was released bak in August 2012 (note that when temperature probe connected rPDUs' did not exist).  As such, my first thing to check would be the Device Definition File (DDF), as per Steve's note below.   Here is also a link to the release notes, of which alot of them are around cybersecurity updates that are included in subsequent DCE release updates.

Dear Warren Robb,

From your comments:

DCE Ve 7.2 was released bak in August 2012 (note that when temperature probe connected rPDUs' did not exist)...

I must refute, as this is incorrect information. Back in 2011, our data center was equipped with a large number of rPDU2G AP8881 with the firmware v.5.x.x and sensors AP9335T(H). Even then, we used the DCE software solution in which the temperature and humidity of the sensors, that were connected to the above rPDUs, were successfully displayed.

Therefore, I can say for sure, that Zenon Ruta problem is that he uses an outdated version of DCE software along with rPDU 2G AP8881 with the latest firmware v.6.x.x. Thus, the normal solution to this problem is to use the latest version of DCE software, which I wrote about in my answer.

With respect.
