Generic 1P PDU Genome won't let me put 2P circuit breakers in it

This question was originally posted on DCIM Support by Christopher Slama on 2019-05-21

Hi,

For the following generic genomes I cannot add 2 pole circuit breakers. Please let me know if this is intended operation.

  1. Generic 1P ATS (GEN_1P_ATS)
  2. Generic 1P PDU (GEN_1P_PDU)
  3. Generic 1P Power Panel (GEN_1P_POWER_PANEL)
  4. Generic 1P Remote Distribution panel (GEN_1P_RDP)

How do I model a panel with a 2 pole circuit feeding it with 2 pole circuits going out of the panel?

Thanks,

Chris

DCO has a simple way of looking at poles: 1/3 pole breakers supports  1/3 phase connections with the neutral (and ground) as implicit, that is, they are not modeled. 2 pole breakers supports a connection between 2 phases without a neutral (ground is still implicit).

Since all the equipment in your list are 1 phase, DCO wants to help you by removing the 2/3 pole/phase breakers from the list, that is, you cannot add a 2/3 pole breaker to a 1 phase panel because the other phases are missing in that equipment.

However, it is possible to create 1 pole breaker that takes up more space than one pole, here is how it is done:

  • in the genome make a copy of a 1 pole breaker rename it.
  • open the properties page:
  • in the breaker section:
  • adjust the "Breaker size" setting from 1 to 2
  • adjust the "breaker rating" to fit your needs.
  • In the "general" section you can change the "model name", "part number", etc. to your liking.
  • Obviously you leave the property page by clinking "ok"

When you use this new breaker you will see that it takes up 2 positions and thus looks like a 2 pole breaker.

I was kind of thinking since the only options for panels seem to be 1P or 3P, that 1P == Single Phase. Thank you for clearing that up.

Is there a generic GEN_2P_ATS or GEN_2P_POWER_PANEL i can use? If not would that be a Genome request?

Thanks,

Chris

Sorry, but that is not possible because DCO does not have the ability to create 2P equipment.

That is, DCO does not support equipment connected to 2 phases and neutral, for equipment with phase-to-phase connections (no neutral) the 1P devices can (in most cases) do the job with the work-around I suggested in my first reply.

Gert,

Thank you for the explanation. This is unfortunate since we have a site with several 2 pole UPS and panel boards.
