CRAC units issues

This question was originally posted on DCIM Support by sheep on 2019-01-13

Hello

In our new data center we've put new CRAC units, configured and activated.

In the picture below - does it look like normal for you? it seems like the CRAC units don't work at all despite the fact that we configured and activated them.

i'll be happy to hear your opinion/help.

Thanks.

Can't really see if anything is incorrect from that picture, perhaps you can elaborate more what is the concern?

What I can see form the above picture:

  • CRACs are located on a different room / corridor next to the main DC.
  • There are perforated floors in main DC, showing calculated airflow speed.
  • Depending on the CRAC size, and expected load on racks for that row, it seems the DC has plenty of cooling capacity, as there are some empty rows, presumably for future?

Things to check between actual & modelling, apart from the usual CRAC parameters, perforated floor.

  1. Return of hot air from rack to CRAC, is it ducted? If yes, has all racks and CRACs been configured to be ducted?
  2. Mixed of ducted CRAC and ceiling tiles, see
  3. Non ducted, with wall not reaching ceiling? If yes, the wall between DC and CRAC corridor need to be modeled accordingly.

Try the following, and see if you encounter any error:

  • Look at 3D on calculated plane, see if you have any error about the CRAC configuration
  • Load up racks with servers with heat load, see if CRACs' cooling bar started to increased.
  • If CRACs cooling capacity is much higher, consider deactivating some to see the changes in CRAC loading when you load some servers to rack in the above step.

Lastly some links that I find useful to refer to when configuring cooling:

Tips and tricks for configuring cooling

Designs with CRAC Units Placed Outside the Room

If you want to fine tune on the cooling parameter, e.g airflow speed etc, do look into:
