Steps Towards Sustainable Healthcare

The NHS is responsible for 4% of the UK’s Carbon emissions.

Air pollution due to fossil fuels can be attributed to 1 in 5 global deaths shows a new study by Harvard and other Universities.

The NHS has collectively come up with several goals surrounding Climate change and air pollution to align with the Governments Carbon Zero strategies.

  • Carbon neutral own operations by 2040 & drive emissions reductions in suppliers and partners

  • NHS C (carbon) footprint net zero by 2040, 80% reduction by 2028-32
  • NHS C footprint plus (+supply chain) net zero by 2045, 80% reduction by 2036-39

The NHS is focusing on ensuring that all new hospitals and hospital buildings produce net zero emissions.

"You cannot manage what you cannot measure. You cannot change what you cannot manage."

It is vital to understand energy usage. One way to reduce emissions drastically is to change the behaviour of people. Just by giving people awareness of the C they are using can enable quick wins in energy reductions.

One way to do this is to compare energy usage per ward – through a single pane of glass. This is something hoped to be done in some UK hospitals.

Energy conservation staff training and education programmes are another way that the NHS is hoping to reduce carbon emissions through behavioural change of staff and patients.

Some specific hospitals have set more ambitious targets. A brilliant way to reduce CO2 emissions is by precuring some ofyour own renewable energy. Having solar arrays on rooftops is a great use of space. This can be maximised by having a Microgrid advisory software installed to predict weather, understand during which times most energy is needed and then to ensure the correct balance of energy storage and creation is found.

Transport is a huge source of emissions. To move towards net zero, it is important to increase the proportion of electric vehicles in the hospital’s fleet and also include EV charging points in the hospital car p

ark to encourage electrical vehicle use.
