Using WireShark to analyse communications on an Ethernet network

Issue General use of the Wireshark program. Product Line Access Expert, Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Expert, EcoStruxure Building Operation, Pelco, Satchwell MicroNet, Satchwell Sigma, TAC IA Series, TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment Ethernet Networks Cause General Information on using WireShark. Resolution Wireshark is an Ethernet packet analysis programme, Which can be downloaded from: Latest version available from Wireshark Locally stored version 1.0.9 Installing Wireshark If necessary, unzip the WireShark executable file to a suitable location on the PC/Laptop you wish the programme to be installed on. Run the executable file and follow the on-screen instructions. Rules for capturing LAN traffic using Wireshark: Do not use a switch or router to connect the LAN capture PC to the network as these will filter important network activity that you will need to see. You will want to capture everything that is passing over the network at the point of concern. Usually, this means tapping into the ethernet at the Controller or controllers, that is having an issue. midBit-Technologies-LLC-10-100 is an example of a device that can be used to easily tap into the network to take the capture. The monitoring PC must see all traffic from the controller's point of view. The monitoring PC can be connected in either two ways: Connected to the network at the controller The customers IT department can mirror all the network traffic from the controllers port to another port the PC can be connected to. If connected to the network at the controllers, the connection must be made through a true ethernet hub. A hub will not selectively filter important network traffic as a switch or a router will do. More information on what a "true ethernet hub" can be found at http://wiki.wireshark.org/HubReference There are however some switches that feature port mirroring, please see How to Configure a NETGEAR Prosafe Plus Switch for Mirroring. If connected to a mirrored port, the port must mirror 100% of the network traffic to and from the controller. No filtering should be done. Once a complete capture file has been obtained it can be filtered after the fact using WireShark or EtherReal. Using Wireshark Run WireShark Start a trace by choosing the "Capture" menu and then select "Interfaces" Choose the appropriate interface. Generally, this can be identified by its IP Address, but if not, then the packets increasing are an indication. Press the "Start" button. The trace will start and will be similar to the following screenshot. After an appropriate time, the trace can be stopped by selecting "Capture" menu and "Stop" To save the capture file, choose "File" menu and "Save As".

Register for The Exchange

Issue The next generation extranet for Schneider Electric's Buildings Business is almost here: The Exchange. As a first phase deliverable, we are very excited to present The Exchange Download Center. All of the assets you once accessed through the Buildings Extranet are now available on a brand new platform. It's easy to search and fast to download. Stay tuned for more great features as we roll this into the all new extranet solution for Buildings. But first, we ask that you register for a new account on The Exchange.   Product Line Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Expert, EcoStruxure Building Operation, Field Devices, Other, Pelco, Satchwell MicroNet, Satchwell Sigma, TAC IA Series, TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment The Exchange Download Center Cause In the near future we will be rolling out a brand new Buildings web experience from the ground up. The first phase of this renovation is the Download Center, where you can find all the files you need to use Schneider Electric's Buildings products quickly and easily. Resolution Navigate to https://ecobuilding.schneider-electric.com * Use a modern browser for the best experience: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer version 8 or later. If you receive the following error in Internet Explorer despite using version 8 or later, the browser is displaying the page in Compatibility View. Click here for more information on Compatibility View and how to disable it. The Download Center will not function properly in Compatibility View.   On the header bar, you will see the option in the top right corner for “Login / Register.” Click it.   If you are already registered, enter your email address and password. If this is your first time registering, click the link for “New to the Download Center? Register here!”   Answer whether or not you are a Schneider Electric employee using the radio buttons. If you are a Schneider Electric employee, enter your SESA ID and your desired password for The Exchange. Click to accept Schneider Electric’s Terms and Conditions and hit “Create Account” * The first time you register you must be connected to the Schneider Electric network, or connected via VPN. This is only required at registration. All future logins can be done externally. If you are not a Schneider Electric employee, enter your first name, last name, company name, location, business email address, and desired password for The Exchange. * It is important to use your business email address if you are a licensed partner. Your email address is used to validate your Partner status and assign the correct permissions to your user profile automatically.   An email is sent to your designated inbox with a link to click through and validate your email address. Once this is done, your login is created and you are ready to start using the Download Center. * If an error is displayed when trying to validate your authentication code, please try to log in. This happens when an email address has already been verified and oftentimes does not indicate an error with the registration.   Once logged in, you can search and download assets available to your user profile. If you attempt to download a file that you do not have access to, you will be given a chance to report if this is in error. Your username, email, and the asset you are trying to access are recorded. Please enter a message if any further description is required and hit “Submit.” A member of our team will get back to you promptly with a resolution. Product Line Satchwell MicroNet, TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment Mozilla Firefox 4 Xenta 511, Xenta 527, Xenta 555, Xenta 701, Xenta 711, Xenta 721, Xenta 731, Xenta 913 SSL Cause The default certificate in the Xenta web server is a self-signed certificate. Since the certificate is not issued by a recognized Certificate Authority the web browser (in this case Firefox 4) cannot validate the authenticity of the certificate and suggests that the user not continue to the website each time the user tries to access it. Resolution There are two possible resolutions: Install the self-signed certificate using the following steps: Expand the "I Understand the Risks" bullet then click the "Add Exception" button. Firefox will automatically retrieve the certificate from the Xenta server. Make sure to check "Permanently store this exception" and then click "Confirm Security Exception" The certificate is now installed and the warning screen will no longer show up when logging into the server. It may be necessary to restart Firefox for the changes to take effect. Note: The certificate will need to be installed in each client computer that accesses the Xenta server but once this complete it does not need to be done again. The exception to this is if the web address of the Xenta server is changed or if Firefox is uninstalled then reinstalled. Update: Starting in September 2014, all major browsers will be disabling 1024-bit roots within their trusted roots stores. Any SSL certificates chained to a 1024-bit root will no longer work on any browsers that takes this action or one that relies on another's root store (the self-signed certificate is 1024-bit). This means that you will still get the security warning even if you have installed the self-signed certificate. Purchase a certificate issued by a Certificate Authority (CA): These certificates are pre-installed into the web browser and will automatically prevent certificate errors from occurring on all client computers that access the web server. Note that these can be quite expensive and unless the Xenta web server is being hosted on the internet they are not necessary. Please see TAC Xenta Server - TAC Networks - Technical Manual for more information. See "There is a problem with this website's security certificate." when logging in to Xenta web server using Internet Explorer 8 for information on installing certificates into Internet Explorer.

IP setup for a Xenta server (Xenta 5/7/9xx) through serial communication

Issue How to set the IP address of a Xenta 5/7/9xx through serial communication. Product Line Satchwell MicroNet, TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment Xenta Servers Xenta 511, 527, 555, 701, 711, 721, 731, 913 Cause If the IP address of a Xenta 5/7/9xx is not known initially, then no configuration can be done through the IP interface. The IP address must be set through serial communication. If the device is new out of the box, or has attempted recovery after a format command, please see Default IP address following Xenta Server "format" command is different than from factory for the known default IP addressing. Resolution Preparation: You need to have an RS-232 serial cable (TAC Xenta Programming Serial Kit 0-073-0920-0). Plug the RS-232 cable in to the RS-232 B port. The RS-232 B port is the second left port at the front. Then connect the other end to the computer. Configuration steps: Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal, and open the HyperTerminal. In Connection Description Windows, type any name you like in the Name box. Click OK. In the Connect to window, choose the correct COM port that the RS-232 cable is using. If you do not know which COM port it is using. Go to your computer device manager. (Right click on “My computer” icon, and choose “Manage”. Then under “System Tools”, choose “Device Manager”. Find “Ports (COM & LPT)” and expend it Find the COM port number that is used by the RS-232 cable. Click OK. Networks - What IP address range can be used for a specific subnet mask?

Issue When using CIDR (Classless Inter Domain Routing) or Supernet subnet masks is not always obvious what range of IP addresses can be used. Environment IP networking where non 255 subnet masks are used. Ethernet Network Subnet Masks IP Address Network Address Subnet Calculator Cause There is a need for an easy way to determine the range of valid IP addresses for the Subnet Mask being used. Resolution When subnet masks with values other than 255 are used; it is not always obvious what is the range of valid IP addresses, this is often called Supernetting. The website link below can calculate the range of valid addresses for any specified subnet value. Here is an example of the issue: An existing network has a network address of 192.168.242.64 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.224 A new network was created with a network address of 192.168.242.95 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.224. When 192.168.242.95 is requested the problem occurs. Using a subnet mask of 255.255.255.224 allows a network address, 30 host address and a broadcast address. Using the existing network as an example; 192.168.242.64 is the network address. 192.168.242.65 to 192.168.242.94  (30 addresses). 192.168.242.95 is the broadcast address. The network address of the new network was set as 192.168.242.95, which is actually the broadcast address of the existing network. The correct network address of the new network is 192.168.242.96, the details are shown below. 192.168.242.96 is the network address. 192.168.242.97 to 192.168.242.126  (30 addresses). 192.168.242.127 is the broadcast address. Visit the following website for a CIDR / Supernet calculator, enter one of the IP addresses in the network and the subnet mask and the calculator will tell you the range of addresses within the same subnet: http://www.subnet-calculator.com/cidr.php In addition to the online calculator, a number of different subnet-calculator programs are available for Android, Apple and Windows Smartphones and for Windows computers.

"There is a problem with this website's security certificate." when logging in to Xenta web server using Internet Explorer 8

Issue When logging into Xenta server using Internet Explorer 8 a certificate error is displayed as displayed below: When logging into the web server of a Xenta controller using Internet Explorer 8 an error message is shown stating that there is a problem with the website's security certificate. The error reads: There is a problem with this website's security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server. We recommend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website. Click here to close this webpage. Continue to this website (not recommended). More information How to install a self signed certificate. Product Line Satchwell MicroNet, TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment Internet Explorer 8 Xenta 511, Xenta 527, Xenta 555, Xenta 701, Xenta 711, Xenta 721, Xenta 731, Xenta 913 SSL Cause The default certificate in the Xenta web server is a self-signed certificate. Since the certificate is not issued by a recognized Certificate Authority the web browser (in this case Internet Explorer 😎 cannot validate the authenticity of the certificate and suggests that the user not continue to the website each time the user tries to access it. Resolution Click "Continue to Website" to continue to the screen shown below. Click on "Certificate Error" which is found on the right side of the address bar at the top. A dialog similar to the one below will open. Click "View certificates". The certificate dialog will appear. Click "Install Certificate." The Certificate Import Wizard will open. Click Next. Allow Windows to automatically select where to store the certificate. Proceed to Finish the Certificate Import Wizard. A notification appears indicating that the certificate was imported successfully. Restart Internet Explorer for the change to take effect. Note: The certificate will need to be installed in each client computer that accesses the Xenta server but once this complete it does not need to be done again. The exception to this is if the web address of the Xenta server is changed or if Internet Explorer is uninstalled then reinstalled. The alternative is that a certificate issued by a Certificate Authority (CA) may be purchased. These certificates are pre-installed into the web browser and will automatically prevent certificate errors from occurring on all client computers that access the web server. Note that these can be quite expensive and unless the Xenta web server is being hosted on the internet they are not necessary. See "This Connection is Untrusted" certificate error when logging in to a Xenta Server using Firefox for information on installing certificates into Firefox. Disabling administrator rights messages in Windows 7 OS and above

Warning Potential for Data Loss: The steps detailed in the resolution of this article may result in a loss of critical data if not performed properly. Before beginning these steps, make sure all important data is backed up in the event of data loss. If you are unsure or unfamiliar with any complex steps detailed in this article, please contact Product Support Services for assistance. Issue Software installation problems with Windows 7 OS and above Configuration problems also known as UAC / User Account Control These problems occur when you receive an error message stating that you do not have the correct administrative rights to continue. Product Line Andover Continuum, EcoStruxure Building Expert, EcoStruxure Building Operation, Satchwell MicroNet, Satchwell Sigma, TAC INET, TAC Vista Environment Windows 7 Windows 8 8.1 Windows 10 Server 2012 Cause Windows 7 and above user administrator privilege settings (UAC) Resolution The solution to this issue is to turn off the user admin settings before the software is installed by following these instructions: Go to Start > Control Panel. Set the view to "small icons" to show all Control Panel icons Click on "User Accounts." Make sure that the account used for installing the software is a full admin user. On this page, click on "Change User Account Control settings", a slider bar that starts with "Never notify" up to "Always notify" by default will be set to "Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer" Set it to "Never notify." This will disable all the admin blocks that pop up in installing and configuring software Once set, restart the PC and then continue with your software installation and configuration Once all is installed and working, the feature may be turned back on if required. Additional requirements for Windows server 2012 and Windows 10. Please note: this process may open the "Windows 10 Firewall up" For Windows Server 2012 and Windows 10, additional steps are required to disable User Account Control. Although the slider bar can be set to “Never Notify”, the User Account Control does not disable completely. The User Account Control can be disabled for any user by setting the system registry value “EnableLUA” to zero in the system registry under the registry key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system”. A Windows registration file has been included in the Continuum 2.01 release in order to expedite these additional steps. Or the attached file EnableLUA.zip can be used, unzip and execute.  Supplement: Using the right click "run as administrator" instead of this is not the same. The right click will only run that .exe as an administrator and not the whole install/configuration package, i.e. SQL2005 manager will fail to run if you do not do as instructed above. You will always get an error stating that you do not have permission to run this program.  Alternate Windows 10 Admin. to User privilege for I/Net Seven:   Go to this path: C:\Program Files (x86)\ Inet Seven 1) Rename and move to a new folder these files.       A) INetIoSrv.exe.manifest       B) INetW.exe.manifest       C) If there is a file equalization client, then there is INetEqzMerge.exe.manifest to do this change on as well.  2) Change the DbCreate by doing this:       Another problem for non-admin users will be logging into and using DbCreate. A work-around for that would be to create a new login into the SQL database that could be shared among all DbCreate users and would provide the necessary rights.       Alternate Windows 7 Admin to User privilege for I/Net Seven:  See the attached Document and Manifest Files
