small 35A UPS ;-)

This question was originally posted by og on APC forums on 4/21/2009

Hello All

I need to get a UPS for a system working on 230V using 5-15A

I would like to:

1. regulate the voltage during normal operation
2. have alternative power for 12 second during power fail- until emergency power generator kicks in. ( 1 min will be nice to have)

The catch:
System require more than 35 Amp during start up for ~5 second or so ( rough pump - E2M28 BOC EDWARDS)
Note that we are NOT going to turn the system ON while power in out.
So UPS system do not need to go that high while power in up or down.
We would like to have smaller inverter and battery thus cost with just a ~10 sec bypass while power is up for the start up
Normal consumption is in the range of 5-15 Amp as mentioned before (~7.5 -10A realistic) ) .

Looking forward to hear what solution you have for that case not just using a bigger UPS

Thx for all

OG

thank you for the reply

I guess I am missing using a step-up transformer

We are taking two 120 / 15A phases and creating single phase 208 which go into a step up transformer which is giving 220-240 on a good day.

There is also a slow blow fuse to overcome this 30A or so for short time.

we have been talking amps and volt amps, do you have any wattage rating on this piece of equipment? this would be a more accurate measure of the power draw over volt amps so we can find out what would be best for you.

before even looking at UPS would appropriately suit this situation, i would think that if you are trying to handle an inrush of 35 amps on a 15 amp circuit, it would trip the upstream breaker. am i missing something?
