Stamina of Back-UPS Pro 900/1200

This was originally posted on APC forums on 7/1/2016

Hi People.

Here's my question/situation

I have small IT site with two small servers cabinets (on different floors). I have a Pro 550, Pro 900 and a newly bought 200.

The recently bought Pro 1200 was to add longer runtime to one of my cabinets. The cabinet in question has a small NAS and a HP Microserver. The runtime shown using the Back-UPS Pro 900 is 128 minutes. We've had a few power-cuts recently and I know this is a roughly accurate runtime.

To add resilience I thought I'd change it to a Back-UPS Pro 1200. I swapped the 900 for the 1200 and the indicated runtime is now 95 minutes! Less!?

The load is the same (NAS, Microserver), so why is the runtime shorter?

Battery is good it was fully charged from new. I'm perplexed, and a bit cross, as I've spent £200 seemingly without any benefit!

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi,

Many thanks for your response.

Since coming across this issue I've subsequently found your 'UPS Selector' tool which has shown that the runtimes of the larger unit, as you state, don't necessarily increase as one might presume they should.

The load I have shows 47 Watts. When I put this into the UPS Selector it does indeed show a shorter runtime at that load on the 1200 than the 900. Logically I imagined the 1200 would have a longer runtime in general but I understand what you are saying about the heavier duty components of the 1200 taking up more of the runtime of the unit itself.

Unfortunately I still need longer resilience so I'm looking at purchasing another 900. I'm left with the 1200 now and not much need for it, but I'm sure I'll find some sort of use for it...

Best regards
