Replacing UPS

This question was originally posted by val on APC forums on 10/3/2012

Hi! I have a simple question. We have about 50 ups units that we have had for 3+ years and some have died on us, luckily I have spares to replace the failed units. My question is instead of ordering a whole new ups unit can i just order the internal battery that goes inside the unit? Does this cost less or is it best to order new units and not just the internal batteries? I have about 5 units that no longer work but instead of ordering brand new units is it best to just order replacement batteries?

Thanks for any help!

depending on the UPS model, it may be cheaper to order a new unit.

for smaller UPS models, a new battery may cost $30 and a new unit is $40. The thing is the stand-alone battery will only come with a 1 year warranty on the battery itself. you can trade in your UPS using our trade UPS service and get a new unit with a new 3 year warranty on the UPS and battery.

on larger units, it makes sense to just replace the battery if the battery is say $50 and the UPS is $900.

there is some more info on apc.com/recycle
