RS900 Repeats Self-Test & USB connection broken

I have two issues with my RS900. (Which I bought as a refurb 2 yrs ago and recently--i.e. 3 months--replaced both batteries.)

(1) Since I purchased the unit, the port (similar to an RJ45) into which the USB cable for the PC plugs in has not worked. I have multiple APC units and tried swapping different cables. My PC never recognized the unit. I called tech support and they told me they could not help me until I had the software installed. I could not install the software b/c the install program could not find an APC unit connected to my computer. Endless loop. I gave up on tech support/warranty and decided to live with not being able to control the unit from the PC.

(2) In the last week, my unit has begun repeating the self-test cycle every few minutes. This is on a PC that the rest of my family uses, so I have not determined how frequently it is occurring. So far, it seems that it starts about mid-day and repeats every 2-3 minutes for about 15-20 minutes. This repeating cycle is new....it used to just do the self-test once a day (as far as I can recall).

Any tips/suggestions on addressing these issues?

1.) when you say the port isnt working - how do you know? do you get an "unknown device" in the device manager (assuming this is Windows)? what are the symptoms of it not working. generally, we should be able to help you if you don't want to use the software..any more details on what you have tried so far would be helpful.

2.) just to be clear, during a self test, the online LED flashes (i think) and the on battery LED will be solid. the UPS would be operating on battery for 15-20 seconds and then going back online (solid green online LED only). is this whats happening? if not, please describe what is happening. are there any strange cables connected or anything new in this set up that you added?
