RS 1000G - Not Charging

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/11/2013

Just bought a new UPS RS 1000G yesterday, and I noticed that the battery was discharging. Today, it finally reached 0% and stated I needed to inspect the unit for a fault and the started beeping. I can't see any issues with it, other than the battery is discharging faster than the wall can charge it.

As far as I have observed, the unit has not gone on battery power once, always remaining on AC power.

Attached *.jpg is of the current status screen within powerchute.

Thoughts?

Hi James,Can you use the display button right above the LCD screen of the UPS to go to the Event Counter just to make sure that the UPS didn't make any switches to On battery operation.

Just ran a self test on the unit via powerchute, and the battery charge went to 25%.

I waited another few minutes, it stated that it was at 23%, and I ran another self test, and it jumped to 34%.

Hi Josh,

I would also advise for you to check if the battery is seated properly and also perform a brain dead on it. I have listed the procedure below on how to brain dead the BackUPS.

1: Disconnect any attached load.
2: Unplug the UPS from the wall socket
3: Disconnect the UPS' internal battery.
4: Push and hold the ""On"" button on the UPS for 5 seconds
5: Reconnect internal battery.
6: Plug UPS in to known good power source.
7: Turn UPS on.

Keep us updated on what will happen on your unit.

I'm having exactly the same problem.

Bought the unit yesterday, installed it last night. All was well until I noticed this morning that the battery charge had gone to zero. No loss of power overnight.

Ran the self test and it passed. Charged the battery, briefly, to about 20%. Minute by minute the charge drops - now 8%.

Performed a 'brain dead' as descr1ribed. Same result.

Wall power is clean and averages 118V. No intervening surge protectors, etc.

Minimal demand on unit (about 200 watts).

Something changed. For four hours it remained at 0% though the software said it was charging. Then it began to charge, very slowly. Two hours later it was at 48% charged. Two hours after that (now) it is at 54%.

I did nothing and the load remained constant.

Next morning finds the XS 1000 battery fully (100%) charged.
