Line-R stays off after fraction-of-a-second power outages / sags?!

This was originally posted on APC forums on 7/9/2009

Please confirm if this is normal behavior in a Line-R AVR (1200VA, European): any minuscule power outage (or drop below acceptable levels) puts the AVR in stand-by mode - all three leds flashing and no power output.

If this is so, it's a very strange - to be euphemistic about it - decision by the engineers, as this means one has to manually restart the unit from the switch. It makes you want to junk the AVR altogether, as the hardware connected to it - in my case, modem, router, lcd, pc speakers -, apparently being much less sensitive to fraction-of-a-second sags, at least stay on all the time...

Perhaps I ought to mention that the AVR I use for my small home heater - a cheaper 500VA piece off the local hardware store - does not blink in such cases (except to let me know it's adjusting the voltage).

Thanks for any answers and suggestions.

Hi landsome,

This does not sound like normal behavior for that unit. I would suggest calling tech support for your region (0 800 894 309) while with the unit to troubleshoot. They may be able to determine if there is a fault or not in the Line-R.

the thing is, it works right with anything else attached, except for the APC UPS

BTW, the AVR is on the lowest voltage setting (220V, which is also the right one for our power grid) of the three available, so it should be the least sensitive to sags on this setting. On any other setting behavior is identical.

Finally, it seems that it is rather slow to respond, as the APC UPS - without AVR - connected to it keeps switching on battery for a second every time there is a sag, while the generic 500VA AVR mentioned above does not have this problem either.
