I need a ups to manage 2 Tivo's on a boat

This question was originally posted by John on APC forums on 5/5/2008

I need a ups to manage 2 Tivo's on a boat that will just work on battery for a few seconds whern switching from AC power from dockside to AC power on Generator.

I don't want it to have an alarm when on battery power or when battery is low or completely discharged, but let it just power down but and will automatically restart when power is reestablished.

The UPS should not be too expensive either.

Any Suggestions?

TIA!!!!

You can disable the alarms through our powerchute software that comes with the unit and it only needs to be configured once. After that the unit should be all set and will definitely re-apply power to the Tivo units once power has been restored.

Well the other situation is when you are at anchor and just let the battery run out and shut down equipmenmt.

can't do this manually as Tivo's are hidden and hard to reachj and controlled by wireless remotes.
So if you go to bed and the thing beeps after 1-15 minutes it is pretty annoying.

Best thing is to just open it up and pull the little speaker off the board I guess:-)

If you do this, your battery is not going to last long at all. It's bad to drain all the way and it's even worse when you don't immediately charge it back up.

The TiVo wouldn't be an issue, but a problem you may encounter is that unless the power from generator is squeaky clean, the APC UPS might refuse to accept it as acceptable quality power and won't switch back to line operation or hunt back and forth between battery and line.

My understanding is a Tivo doesn't draw too much power, so a rather small UPS would be fine for your scenario. I would still check the sticker on the Tivo's for their power information to make sure the UPS is large enough. Something like what's linked below should be fine for you scenario.

Looks good! Are you sure there are no alarms and it res supply power to the tivo's by itself when power comes back on even it it was completely discharged?
Does this functionality have to be programmed or is it OK out of the box?

Thanks!!

Thanks, last question.. I have an old back ups 350 es that may just need a battery.

That should work too it the power consumption is ok Right?

Same functionality with alarms and reenergizing correct?

Yeah, assuming the draw on the two tivo's was low enough and you were able to get enough runtime out of the unit to meet your needs, a 350 would work fine.

That is working fine. Guess what though. I am unable to disable the alarm when The UPC goes into backup mode.
Have tried many times with latest powerchute software but it just goes into default and beeps.
Can't let that happen as when I shut off generator to go to sleep I just want a power down with no beeps. (UPC is not accessable to just shut off manually)
I am ready to open up the UPC and pull the speaker off the board.
Any ideas?

Is the beeping you hear a repetitive beeping without any large 30 second gaps in between? If so, that's the low-batt warning that cannot be silenced. You wouldn't normally hear that unless the UPS thought there was about 2mins runtime left on the discharging battery.

You said that your intended purpose is to use it for powering it only while you're moving between dockside and generator.
Are you saying it continues to beep while on generator power?

Otherwise,
Read the manual on the UPS, but if there's no way to disable the speaker by software, as in the case of older SUVS and BackUPS units, try putting a tape over the buzzer. It will reduce the sound level significantly. If this doesn't yield an acceptable reduction, you'll have to jumper or bypass the buzzer.
