How to charge batteries for a BR1300G?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 12/5/2013

I used to have the BR800. In order to start using new one or after changing its batteries you had to charge its batteries by connecting it to the power line,

leave it alone  for about 24 hrs without connecting it to a computer and other devices and pushing power button.

Only after that you need connect it to computer and other devices and power it on.

In the manual for the BR1300G nothing explain how batteries charging has to be done.

Did I can connect it to power line and immediately power it on, or I have to connect it to devices and power it on immediately after connecting it to power line.

I will greatly appreciate someone to explaining me.

It's basically the same for any Back UPS product. The UPS charges the battery whether it is on or not, as long as its connected to AC power/plugged in to the wall.

You can do one of a few things.

  • Plug it in to the wall, leave it turned off, and don't touch it for the 24 hours. Then, turn it on and connect your devices.
  • Plug it into the wall, turn it on, wait 24 hours.
  • Plug it into the wall, turn it on, connect your equipment and understand that the battery will charge but if you have a power event while the battery is charging, this will affect your current on battery runtime and potentially lengthen the charging cycle due to the interruption.

The above methods are all acceptable and depend on what you want to do - if you don't have many power events in your area, then you can proceed with the third option in my opinion.
