Constant "clicking/cycling" BackUPS NS 600

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/23/2011

Just started doing this the morning.

Was occurring very fast, click-buzz then 2-5 seconds and click-buzz again, over and over. Sometimes it will stop for a couple of minutes, then start again. Shut down system, unplugged everything, problem continues. Shut BackUPS unit down, left it off for about 5 minutes, immediately on re-start with nothing plugged in to unit, started again immediately. No bad weather, don't believe power line work is occurring in the area. Conclusion I reached is that it is either power line problem or problem with the BackUPS unit Sometimes it will stop for a few (3-10 minutes) minutes, then start again.

Unit is about 4 -5 years old. Maybe new batteries needed? If batteries needed, any online shopping advice?

Anything I can check?

Equipment attached and on:
19" monitor
7 year old PC with 3G SDRAM, 1 500G hard drive
Speakers
Modem
Router

Hi Lonnie,

Thank you for the reply.

If you would like to know if the battery needs replacement, you may try doing self test and/or pull plug test to see if you still have sufficient battery runtime to support your load.

To do self test - testing the capacity of the internal battery

1.Should have load attached on the UPS
2.Press and hold the On button until the unit beeps then release - unit is expected to switch back online w/o any weird indication if the battery is still in good condition.

To do pull plug test
1. Loads should be attached
2.Unplug the UPS from the wall for 1 minute - no load should drop

I would suggest you to install [PowerChute Personal Edition|http://www.apc.com/tools/download/index.cfm] for monitoring and provide your devices with gracefull unattended shutdown in case of power disturbance.

Should you have any further question, don't hesitate to reply. 😃 Have a good one!

Hi Lonnie,

You may send the serial number on private using the "envelop" icon from the top right side of the page where you see "log out". This is in order for me to know how old this unit from it's manufacture date.

To answer your question, for an APC UPS, we recommend that the battery be replaced once every 3 years depending on how the battery is being used. The UPS will give you this indication if it has bad battery

Green LED /
Flashing
Constant Tone

We're have a slow network today and we are sorry for the inconvinience.

Do you know when the UPS clicks, what is the status of the green light?

Hi Lonnie,

Good day!

Id like to ask some information so I can better understand the issue.

Can you give us the exact model and serial number(private message)? Are you using the PowerChute Personal Edition Software to monitor this UPS? Did the UPS drop any of your load when you hear those audible alarm?

I also would like to share this link for information clicking sound on the unit.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry that I did not include the Make/model: APC BackUPS NS 600 / Model BN600

Why do you need the serial number? I can not find a way to PM you.

I do not use PowerChute Personal Edition Software.

The system monitor that I use for monitoring temp, power, etc., showed no power fluctuations and there was no interruption of PC/modem/router during the event. The APC system never "beeped" during this event. Just the repeated click-buzz, pause, click-buzz. I have not heard that for about 2 hours now, so maybe it was, indeed, a problem with power lines or power line work in the area.

Other Questions, if I may.
How often should the battery need replacement? What indication will I receive if battery is weak?

Is the apc.com site always so slow? I have tried to log on to the apc.com site to get some specs and other information, but my browser just sits there after I choose USA saying "Waiting for apc.com...". I cleared cookies and cache and started over, but same result. I can not put my hands on my original APC box/container with information inside of it since I am packed for moving and can not find the packing box that information is in.

Awaiting your reply. Thanks.

I am pretty certain that the unit and battery are over 3 years old. I will PM the serial number.

The equipment listed above is what is normally attached. I shut down system every night but leave everything plugged in to UPS and leave UPS on. I assume that UPS must be on for charging, but could never confirm that in the documentation. Printer, which is rarely on, and speakers are plugged into surge-only side. When I receive power interruption "beep" which is very very rare I immediately power down everything attached to UPS. In other words, I do not leave running for longer than absolutely necessary on battery power.

Thanks for the warning indicator info. After I read it, I remember seeing that in the manual.

I do not know the status of the light when it click-buzz and repeat.

I have not had that problem since my last reply, so it may have been a problem with power in my area of the city.
