Model: BR1500g
Symptom 1: blinking battery symbol with X (indicating battery failure, not connected).
Symptom 2: Powerchute self-test failure
Troubleshooting: disconnected power, and, battery back-up failed over correctly with expected run-time showing. Manually re-ran self test from powerchute software, passed. Battery indicator is no longer there/
Question: should I still be concerned with effectiveness of UPS... or was this an anomaly?

It was, in all probability, an anomaly. I've had a few BR1500G (and 1300) models do the same thing, particularly in environments where there are lots of momentary power disruptions, noise on the line or other things that frequently trigger the UPS to intervene by switching to its battery.
On every one of them, disconnecting power, the battery and holding down the power button (to clear out any power reserve and ensure that the unit shuts down completely) has conclusively resolved the problem after allowing the battery to recharge. None of them have had any problem since.
