Back-UPS BR1500G Fan Loud

This was originally posted on APC forums on 11/21/2015

I just bought a Back-UPS BR1500G last week and for some reason the fan likes to turn on when its not even running on battery, the problem is it rarely turns off and is extremely loud. If it were operating on battery while being this loud I wouldnt have a problem with it at all, but if my PC pulls more than 350 watts it will turn the fan on even though it isnt on battery.

This cant be considered acceptable, considering how little air you can feel coming in and out of the APC UPS, theres no reason to justify that sort of noise level. My pc changes the air in its tower 3 times a second and is NO WHERE near that loud. I cant even watch netflix or youtube while the UPS fan is on, which unfortunately is quite often.

My PC uses less than 200 watts idle, around 250 when just messing around on Internet and 350-450 while gaming.

Again, if the power went out and the fan kicked on and was that loud, I would call that acceptable as its protecting my pc and giving me time to shut everything down safely, but theres absolutely no legitimate reason for it to be that loud otherwise. Is mine just a dud or is there something I can do about this.

EDIT: For some reason this forums text editor removes spaces for no reason, so forgive the fact that alot of this post has 2 words running into eachother.

Thanks for the reply, I guess its nice to know that im not the only one that is experiencing this issue. I rather not void a warranty if I dont have to, i'll probably just end up building a small sound dampening enclosure to fit the UPS in and just ventilate the whole thing with quiet fans.

I have 3 of them, two bought a month ago from different sources, one bought a year ago. The two I bought a month ago has the problem you described, the one I have from a year ago doesn't. It looks like a firmware issue, somehow the "latest" firmware shipped with these units is making the fan start for hours for no reason. I guess is related to load and temperature, as my old one is hotter than my two new ones as the fan is not on almost all the time, just when the power is out. As I have the three of them on the same room where I work and I couldn't stand the 45db (or more) the the fans generated, I opened the three UPSs and replaced the fan with a quieter one and I'm a happy guy now. So, if you ask me if there's a solution to this fan problem, I guess the answer is no, wish APC could address this problem as it's really annoying. Be careful if you replace the internal fan (3-pin 24v fan) as the pinout on the connector is different, wires are switched on it.
