APC BR1500GI – Physical orientation of UPS and batteries during the time of post delivery

This was originally posted on APC forums on 11/25/2019

Hi APC Experts,

Please let me ask you a few questions regarding the proper physical delivery of an APC BR1500GI UPS by post.

Is it safe to rotate the entire product (batteries included) by 90 degrees, lay it on its side, and thus send it by post in this tilted position?

Or would such a rotation do harm to the batteries during the time of delivery (appx. taking 3-4 days)?

The batteries are still in the UPS. I mean keeping it in its original packaging, which would be further put into an outer cardboard box.

Furthermore, is it rather recommended to take out the batteries before delivering the UPS by post?

I have read the product’s user manual, but unfortunately, I could not find any specific information regarding the physical orientation of the batteries during the time of post-delivery, or if they have to be kept upright same as if the UPS was operating under normal conditions at home.

Many internet sources have contradictory opinions on this topic; hence I am also confused.

I would be more than happy if an expert from you could enlighten me on this less educated question.

Thank you very much in advance,

Lorand

Hi William,

Thank you very much for your answer. It is highly appreciated.

Now, I understand much better how these types of batteries can be handled.

Hi APC Experts again,

Correction to my previous post after having properly done my homework:

I was wrong in my last post.

The proper handling of the UPS and the battery pack itself require: first, disconnecting the battery from the UPS for the time of transport; second to discharge the capacitor in the UPS by pushing the ON/OFF button for a few seconds. The latter step ensures that the UPS is no more electrified.

Now, I have done all these steps, but I am still not sure of the disconnected battery has to be kept in a specific physical orientation during the time of transport, or is it allowed to be turned upside down or in any specific direction.

Would turning it sideways or even to the more extreme upside down do harm to the electrolyte or to the battery itself in general?

This is a sealed original APC Pb-battery pack that I have, and on nowhere says it is not allowed to rotate it physically, but I am still unsure about it.

Unfortunately, I cannot make it sure either that the post services company will keep the package in a specific direction during transport, probably they are not so gentle packages either.

Any help, response from you experts would be highly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance,
Lorand

No. The battery can be safely stored, shipped or operated in any position.

You could write on the package "this side up" or something similar, but there is no need to. I personally wouldn't because someone might deliberately turn it over "just because" it said not to.
