Smart-UPS RT 8000 RM XL - Battery Failed

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/27/2013

We have an Smart-UPS RT 8000 RM XL with two external battery packs installed.  The Self-Test returns "Critical - UPS: At least one faulty battery exists."

Is there a way to determine which battery is actually faulting?

Yes, batteries are hot swappable. As I am sure you understand though, during the 1-2 minute swap or however long it takes, you won't have battery back up and the UPS will temporarily alarm that the batteries are disconnected (if you remove all of them at the same time).

Do you normally work with a particular reseller? I believe what you need is RBC44 (if i am not mistaken) APC Replacement Battery Cartridge #44 and also we have this helpful "Where/how to buy" here for online -> http://www.apc.com/buy/display_online_resellers.cfm and then there is a link off of that for local folks as well.

Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, on this model, the batteries themselves don't have the ability to report that and the UPS is only looking at the DC bus itself for the UPS and the battery packs.

Are the batteries of all the same age? Because then, they should all probably be replaced because they will probably start failing around the same time.

If not, the only way to do it is basically disconnect them all and run self tests with just the internal batteries and then just with each one of the packs connected to narrow it down frown

Thank you for the information. Is it possible to replace the batteries without having to power off everything that is attached to the UPS? Perhaps put the UPS in bypass?

Any recommendations of where I can purchase the batteries?

I do not have a particular reseller that I work with on a regular basis.  I will use the information you provided to help.

Thank you for ALL the information.
