SYMIM5 RIM Fault with Data Dumps

This was originally posted on APC forums on 2/19/2014

Hi All,

First, thanks for the great forum for us to post questions.  I have a Symmetra LX and have two questions after we have had an error on the system.

Question 1

In our Main IM slot (lower slot) SYMIM5 is is operational but is labled a SYMIM5Q, I can find no documentation on what the different is between a normal SYMIM5 and the 5Q version?

Question 2

Our system recorded a fault in the RIM (It is labeled SYMIM5) and received the following data :

FW REV: 513,Slv : 602

H/W Rev:

SN: Qd1023360096

Mfg Date:  06/03/10

RIM Status Dump :

R 05 0000 0000 0000

0000 0000 E0Eb 806B

29F7E0EB  1E07D2AD

We have two other spares RIMS that we tried to replace that have exact same firmware and get a similar error as follows:

spare unit 1

FW REV: 513,Slv : 602

RIM Status Dump :

R 05 0000 0000 0000

0000 0000 E0EB 806B

29F7E4EB  1E07D2AD

The underlined 4 and 7 are only differance in the DUMP's.

All three RIM units (including the original that has been working for years) have same repeatable failure when plugged into the system.

When any of the RIM units are installed they work for approximately 90 seconds then fail.  Here is the error message :

v1

Name     : APC1

Location : Server Room

Contact  : David

http://APC1.compro.net

http://10.10.10.222

Serial # : ZA0653003989

Device Ser #: QQ1020260075

Date: 02/19/2014

Time: 11:05:37

Code: 0x0205

Critical - UPS: Redundant Intelligence Module failure.

I am starting to suspect it is actually the IM and not the RIM, any help ????

Thanks

HI All,

Problem solved and we are back to normal working status.  The error we received consistently claimed the RIM was at fault.  We used our spare RIM parts and the error were the same on each RIM.  We took the system into Maintenance Mode via the switch and moved the MIM into the RIM and put our original failed RIM back into the lower slot, making it the master.  Interestingly, now the fault moved to the RIM.  At this point we have either a bad RIM slot or a bad MIM (original) that has lost communications but will operated as a MIM without a RIM installed.  We removed the suspect SIMIM5 and placed our two spares SYMim5's into the slots and all errors are cleared.

The confusion was that in our original setup the fault report (and red light led's)  were always in the RIM when in fact is appears the MIM lost communications resulting in the same error.  Just FYI on how we resolved the unique failure.

Thanks to all for you help in supporting our question.

Hi there, the "Q" at the end of your part number , together with the "QQ" in the serial number , denote that this is a "refurbished" item from APC stock....here on the west coast we sometimes get such items out of the Los Angeles distribution center. If you open a tech support case with APC they can look at the hex code in the status dump and help determine what the failures relate to. Good luck !

I agree tech support can go over this in more detail via phone or maybe email but I'll provide what I know.

1.) As Battman indicated, a Q at the end of a SKU (and you'll also see a Q in the second character of its serial number - like what you pasted from the email alert) indicates a part is refurbished. We typically send these out for warranty replacements after the initial 30 days of warranty. Did you have IM replaced under warranty at some point for something else in 2010ish?

2.) On the second issue, after R 05 in the raw status - there are the five groups of '0000' and this is where faults would be displayed. So, what you posted indicates at the precise time you extracted the raw status, the module was not likely in a fault state.

What I would do is:

Thank you for your reply.  I now understand the difference, as I just did not see a difference in the parts, but make perfect sense to identify  new or refurbished units.  I see in our activity log indeed we did send a unit into APC for repair and this is the unit we received back a few years ago.

Thanks  for the help....
