PCBE V8.5.1 Cannot Fine SMT750 Connected Via USB

This was originally posted on APC forums on 3/14/2011

Hello,

I have several dozen APC UPSs in service. Those that are configured with a serial cable virtually never have communication problems with the systems. Those that connect via USB are very hit or miss. At present I have a SMT750 connected to a Dell Precison Workstation via USB. I have installed PCBE 8.5.1 on the workstation. The agent does not find the SMT750 on its own. After it fails to automatically locate the UPS it allows me to specify the type of connected device. Even after doing this it fails to communicate with the device.

Interestingly, I have another twin to this arrangement (Dell Precison workstation, SMT750, USB, PCBE 8.5.1) and it does in fact communicate properly.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled PCBE, checked and rechecked USB cable, etc., etc.,

So, is there some magic bullet to getting PCBE to find these USB connected devices?

This entire process is consuming way more time than it should.

Thank You

Success!

In the course of trying your recommendation I noticed that I actually had two versions of Powerchute installed on the workstation. The recently installed 8.5.1 and a previously installed 9.x. I had not noticed the 9.x installation since it appears in the middle of the Control Panel Add/Remove list under "Powerchute....", whereas the version 8.5.1 copy appears near the top of the list under "APC...". Once the 9.x version was removed everything worked fine.

Thank you very much for your time and recommendations.

Thank you for the reply.

In answer to your question, yes, the UPS does in fact show up under HID in the Device Manager.
