How to change notification-type for event "UPS: Passed a self-test."

This was originally posted on APC forums on 2/1/2012

Hi there,

we have four UPS* with NMCs in our company and now I've configured the "notifications by event" as follows..

All critical events >>> e-mail
All warning events >>> e-mail
All informational events >>> log

It seems to work BUT I also receive an e-mail everytime this event accurs: *"UPS: Passed a self-test."*

How can I disable the e-mail notification for this event?

I already looked in the list of all events but "Passed a self-test." ist not even in there.

Please help,
Florian

*) The models we have in use...
Smart-UPS 3000 XLM
Smart-UPS 750 X
Smart-UPS 1000

Hi Brian,

It is not a glitch but rather by design. I am not sure of all the details on why that is but I can tell you that it won't change. I think the way it is now, self test FAILED is the event we provide to the user and self test PASSED is the clearing event to that condition. Well, a self test only fails when your battery fails which is let's say once every 2-5 years. The clearing condition is true every other time in those 2-5 years because your battery is not in a failed state most of the time. It is just one of these events that I don't think works well with the event/clear event mechanism unfortunately but there are not many more like this, if any.

please refer to these instructions: http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8673

also, please understand that if your self test fails one day, and then you replace the battery or remedy the issue, you will not get a self test passed event after that since you are disabling it now. someone could become concerned that it is not passing but it is really because the email notification is disabled. i'd make sure you keep it enabled for the event log at least.

I am experiencing the same issue. I have 2 email addresses configured on the SMX1500RM2UNC. I have configured it so that all informational notifications go to only one of those addresses, but the "passed a self test" informational notification goes to both addresses. That particular notification is not listed in the area to configure notifications by event. I tried visiting the link to instructions you provided, but that address appears to no longer be valid. Could someone please provide updated information on how to configure this single notification, since it doesn't seem to adhere to the All Informational group and has no single event to configure that I can find? I have several APCs that all send this one email notification to an address i don't want receiving it. Thanks!

Hi Brian..here is an updated link which should guide you through the steps to make this change (along with a disclaimer of behavior you may not expect at a later time): http://www.apc.com/support/index?page=content&country=ITB〈=en&locale=en_US&id=FA156104

Thanks! That should work. Any plans to change what appears to be a glitch in the system at some point, in this event not being listed in the event list?
