Firmware Upgrade to 374 on AP7941 & AP7940

This question was originally posted by Kevin on APC forums on 6/16/2016

Hello Everyone,

I currently am attempting to upgrade 40+ PDU's via the IPLIST and aoc_hw02_RPDU_374.bin. I have confirmed the IPLIST.TXT and I get the following on all instances:

Using AOS file : AOS = apc_hw02_aos_390.bin
Using Application file: APP = apc_hw02_rpdu_374.bin

Starting Upgrade to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Checking network connection ...  OK

Testing login ...  OK

Checking version information ...

Version check failed, see log for details

~~Results Log~~

Version check failed
Checking network connection ... Checking version information ... File foundfir.txt doesn't exist

I have tried connecting via FTP with the Cred's and can connect fine. I also tried inputting manually on the upgrade tool and get the same error. I would very much prefer not to do this one by one via the FTP transfer as I have a lot of PDU's to update.

Any help would be very much appriciated.

-Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Can you attach the result.txt here as a file so I can look at it? You can remove the IP and sensitive info from there too. I want to have the file in case I need to show someone and also, the forum is showing me weird spacing so I am not sure if I am reading the messages right.

Also, did you try this on multiple PDUs versus just the same IP that is the first one on the iplist.txt? Just want to make sure we tried more than one to have that as a piece of info.

I was thinking that it checks the version info by checking the headers in the event and/or data.txt files on the system there in the root directory but I have to double check and make sure I am right.

P.S. - if you FTP to one manually like you said, can you show me/screenshot the output of the ls (thats an L) command within FTP? That will show me what .bin files are there already and what version you're coming from.

Thanks!

Hello Angela,

Thank you for the quick response! I have attached a screen shot from Filezilla. Some of the PDU's have newer firmware then this one.  I have tried more then one of the IP's manually. On a separate issue I know (4) of our PDU's are locked up from the previous PDU FW bug. Hence this upgrade is needed. Lastly, will upgrading the FW will keep the ip and user setting's?

Hello Angela,

You can close this issue. I put a 7940 instead of 8940.....They seem to be upgrading now with the new FW. Need Coffee....

Hi Kevin,

The good news is that I see what the issue is - you're trying to load the firmware for our older AP7XXX series models Rack PDUs onto the newer style AP8XXX which I can tell that you have because of the current firmware version you can see in the filezilla screenshot - AOS 5.1.9/rpdu2g 5.1.6. I had an inkling that may be it when you mentioned the firmware bug and PDUs being locked up since that is an issue on the AP8XXX series.

For the AP8XXX series, use the latest firmware here: ftp://restrict:Kop$74!@ftp.apcc.com/restricted/hardware/nmcard/firmware/rpdu2g/640/apc_hw05_aos640_r...

The olderPDUs use version 3.X.X and the newer ones have v5.X.X and v6.X.X. I imagine you have seen the v6 interface and are aware of the differences (UI, new features, etc). This will cover specifically going from v5 to v6 and also downgrading->http://www.schneider-electric.us/en/faqs/FA167693 You'll see a few things do get reset - email notifications for example. But, if you have a config.ini, you could re-load those and it should work - either from a v5 or v6 device. That kbase exists because v5 and v6 are like apples and oranges under the hood. Typically, once you're on the same major platform, yes, settings are kept and we always try to keep TCP/IP at a minimum where we can. There only have been a select few instances (specifically of downgrading between v5.1.X and v5.0.X, where we could not - due to the introduction of IPv6 and downgrading back to an IPv4 only stack.

Hello Angela,

Updates are working smooth. I am using AP8xxx Series Rack Power Distribution Unit Firmware Revision 6.4.0 as the new VERSION.
