Can I change part of battery cartridge first and the rest later?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 3/21/2017

I have Smart-UPS 3000 RM XL with 2 ext modules.

Display panel has charge led flashing in union but no bad battery indication.

Status in web console shows "Batteries discharged" and 3 minutes for runtime.

Does this mean all 5 cartridges are bad?

If so, can I still replace part of those cartridges first and the rest later?

If not, how can I identify bad cartridges to replace?

Thank you for your help in advance!

Re: Charge LED flashing in union while no bad battery LED is on

This would indicate that while the batteries can still support a load (and there for are not "bad") they have an extremely short runtime available. Do you know by any chance when they were last replaced? If they are recent, it is possible that the system is just confused about its actual runtme. We strongly recommend replacing all batteries at the same time. Mixing and matching old and new batteries can result in swelling and venting of the older batteries in the system.

Yes, just dont reconnect the other external pack unless you have also replaced batteries in that one as well.

I believe our batteries are pretty old.

Let me put it this way.
Our SUPS 3000 RM XL has one main unit and two expansion modules.
Can I disconnect one expansion module and just replace battery cartridge of one main unit and one expansion module?
