APC Smart UPS SMT2200RM2U Output Off

This was originally posted on APC forums on 11/9/2015

We were getting a "replace battery" alarm from our rack mounted unit that was installed in 2011.  We purchased a new battery and installed it this weekend.  However, when we plug our items back in, no power is going to them.  I printed out the manual and found on the menu that the Output is Off.  I couldn't figure out how to turn the output to On.  Should it have worked immediately?  We currently don't have anything plugged into it since it wasn't transferring power to our computers.  The battery is now showing 98% power so I know that is working.

I don't know where the software is for the unit so all I have access to is the small display screen on the unit itself.

Did we do something incorrectly when installing the new battery?

my boss swapped out the battery this weekend. he said that our kind of unit needed to be opened up to get to the battery. and I looked at the unit and it does look like the battery is screwed in, and lot as easy to eject and swap out as the batteries on our server (which sound like what you described)

So yes, we powered down the unit, unplugged everything, installed the new battery, plugged it in and turned it on.  it recognized the battery and started charging it and we finally had an end to the endless beeping to change the battery.  But when we plugged in the servers to the apc, they weren't getting any power and looking at the menu, it said "Output off".

So I just went back to the unit and tried your suggestions.  I held down the power button and after a moment I got a beep and a red light that says "fault state: output over volt".  but we don't have anything plugged in to the output.  so I don't know what is tripping the unit.

Hi Maggie,

The batteries are hot swappable meaning the UPS does not need to be turned off to replace it. It sounds like you're saying though you unplugged everything connected (your equipment), turned the UPS off, and replaced the battery but now the unit hasn't turned on? Or did something else happen? I am just wondering how the UPS output got turned off to verify how to turn it back on again.

If what I suspect is accurate, try these:

  • Hold down power button to see if it will prompt you to force an immediate ON to the outlet groups.
  • Verify your menu is in Advanced Mode (which can be selected by pressing Esc and then to Configuration menu by toggling it from Standard to Advanced). Once you do this, press Esc again and find the Control menu to command the outlets on using whichever option you need (with/without delay, etc).

Hope that helps get you started. The LCD can be a little misleading since when the unit is energized, the display comes on but not necessarily the Output power.

Hmm, OK. Yeah, this unit needs to be opened to get the battery out but next time, you won't need to unplug all of your equipment or even turn the UPS off if it is not necessary for you. It would alarm at you while the batteries are disconnected and you'd have no battery back up during the time your swapping the battery but at a minimum, you shouldn't need to go through the hassle of unplugging everything, even if you'd prefer to turn off the load during the procedure in case of a power blip.

Moving on though, on the LCD, does it show you a good input voltage and battery voltage? I'd observe what those are reading. You could also check through the Logs menu and see if anything different than the fault you saw is listed there.

The next thing you can try is a braindead to reset the unit and see if anything changes. To do this:

  1. Turn off the equipment that is connected to the UPS. (Well, that's done already)
  2. Disconnect the UPS from its AC (input power) source.
  3. Turn off the output on the UPS either via the LCD or using the Power button (refer to your user's guide.) (That's already done too.)
  4. Remove the internal and external battery connections from the UPS for 20 seconds. (To do this, just unplug the connector for the battery - no need to unscrew it and slide the whole module out).
  5. It is now safe to remove or install a SmartSlot accessory card, reinstall the battery connections, and then plug the UPS back in and turn it on.

Then, try to force the UPS on one of those ways we discussed and see if the fault still exists. If it does, I'd suggest sending this thread and anything else you've tried to tech support (email or phone) to verify if there is anything else to try.

Essentially, the UPS logic has detected an abnormal output voltage when it is trying to turn on which would not be good for the attached equipment so it is preventing the UPS from starting. I am not sure what would cause this unless you are aware of an event or incident before the replace battery popped up.

Let me know if you have any questions before you start. Or if you prefer, phone support can walk you through any of this step by step.

thank you for all your help Angela.  We never could get the unit to turn on the output and instead the unit stopped charging the battery, and the battery completely drained.  The unit is from 2011 and out of warranty.  We're just going to buy a new one and save us the headache of trying more to fix this one.

You're welcome Maggie - and sorry to hear! We do offer a Trade-UPS program if you weren't aware that you can do via a reseller/distributor or us directly. Even though the old unit may have a problem, you can trade it in to get credit towards a new one.

Here is the link to read/look a little more if you're interested -> http://buy.apc.com/commerce/storefronts/tradeups/tradein.aspx?storefrontcode=apcetu&countrycode=us&l...

Hi Alain -

Your issue is different in that it is displaying a fault. You can attempt to clear your fault by performing a "brain dead" procedure. To do this:

  • Turn off and remove connected load
  • Turn off UPS
  • Disconnect battery(s)
  • Unplug UPS from wall

You can now reconnect the battery and input power then turn the unit back on. If the fault clears you should be OK. If it persists you should contact your local APC Tech Support Team for further assistance.

thanks!

Liam
