APC Smart UPS 3000 (SUM3000RMXL2U) missing display panel & bezel.

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/10/2016

Hello,

I bought a used APC Smart UPS 3000 (SUM3000RMXL2U) with no batteries and no front panel. Anyone know where I can get the display panel and bezel? Is it even possible to use this UPS without the front panel?

Here are pics of it: https://imgur.com/a/AJt3k

or see attached pics

Cheers!

Hi,

I was wondering if you still have the display assembly for SMX3000RMLV2UNC.  I have a brand new unit that got hit with an automatic door and broke the front panel off.

I don't think you'll be able to get replacement parts from APC. As far as I know they don't supply anything. (Being as I'm not affiliated with APC or Schneider Electric, I could be incorrect.)

You can use the unit in its current condition, even without a control panel. I'd give it a careful inspection first to make sure that nothing has been grossly damaged or is shorting out anywhere. So long as you don't find anything of a serious nature as concerns damage, you can attach a 940-0024 serial cable to the UPS and this will give you complete control from a terminal emulator or some UPS management software (Powerchute Plus, apcupsd, APCFIX, etc.) Communication settings to use are 2400/8/N/1, and no flow control. If you are going to test the UPS in this way, temporarily remove the network management card (it looks to be an AP9619) from the SmartSlot.

Although you'll probably have to reset it, that network card can also operate the UPS. At the very minimum, you'll probably need to clear an unknown administration password. From there you can direct the card to clear all of its settings. This can be done with the card in place, from any terminal emulator and using the same cable as previously mentioned.

940-0024 cables with letter suffixes (b, c, d, and so on) are just newer revisions of the same thing.

These units do require at least minimally serviceable and charged batteries before they'll do anything. Otherwise they will act completely dead.

Hello William,

Thank you so much for your message! That's too bad that they don't make them anymore. I've tried looking at ebay for spare parts but no joy. I could get that serial cable but I don't have any laptops/pc's that have any serial ports so would I be able to use the network management card instead? Also, how many batteries would I need to have it operational? Oh and what model batteries would I need?

I'm wondering if it's worth putting money into this. Maybe I'd be better off selling it as spare part? I have no idea how much I'd ask for though.

Thanks again for your advice!

Best regards,

Mike

You can use the NMC to manage this UPS but you need to get it reset as William explained. I suggest you plug the UPS in and even though the UPS is not on, the NMC should be energized. Take note of the LED you see on it - what color and if flashing or solid - and let us know. I suggest doing this without the network cable connected. Once we know what state is in by the LED, then I can give some advice on resetting it, possibly without the serial cable. We do have a few tools outside of the serial cable to get it up and running but it all depends on the current state. And if the password does need to be reset, then we do need to be able to serially connect to it. You could look into a USB to serial adapter which is what I use for our stuff. (I have this one https://www.radioshack.com/products/gigaware-usb-to-serial-cable?variant=5717179013)

If the NMC has a solid green LED, you could maybe connect a crossover cable to the ethernet port and do a packet capture/sniffer to see what IP address is on the device. But, then if you find that and the credentials are not apc/apc, you'd need the serial cable to reset the password on the NMC.

On the batteries, they are listed here -> http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Smart-UPS-XL-Modular-3000VA-120V-Rackmount-Tower/P-SUM300... (make sure to scroll down to the middle of the page and click technical specifications) and it says APC part number RBC43. You'd buy qty 1 of that part number. If you look online, you can probably find equivalents to that but be aware it may not come with all the required connectors and wiring or be of the same quality. Incase the UPS has other problems too, you'd probably want to check on any return policies if it turns out the unit doesn't work properly so you can return the batteries.

Another option to turn it on assuming the UPS energizes when you turn it on (you can tell if an NMC LED comes on as we discussed) may be to short two of the pins on the DB-9 serial port as sort of a dry contact and we may be able to get it to turn on that way. Here are some notes I had:

DB9 – Turn On/Off

Remote On

Application of a short (or a momentary button) connected between pins 7 and 8 of the DB9 for 200 ms (60Hz) 240ms (50Hz) will result in the UPS detecting an ON command.  The UPS will then process its on sequence.

Remote Off

Application of a short (or a momentary button) connected between pins 7 and 9 of the DB9 for 200 ms (60Hz) 240ms (50Hz) will result in the UPS detecting an OFF command.  The UPS will then turn off immediately.

I am not sure if it's compatible or not, but I have a working display board and push button switch assembly from an SMX3000RMLV2UNC.  Possibly someone from Schneider could verify compatibility.  The circuit board has a ribbon cable and a smaller two position connector to hook it to the UPS motherboard.

I don't have the UPS-wide plastic bezel or the plastic assembly that attaches the display and the push button assembly to the larger bezel.

Let me know.

Hello Angela!

Wow! Thank you soo much for all that info! I'm going to start off by looking for a battery and the cable. I actually didn't test the unit before I got it. The guy that I got it from got it at an auction from a school to help out his homeless friend so he doesn't know much about it. In the end he gave it to me for free as I explained to him the bezel situation. He said that if I do manage to make it work that he'd appreciate a $30 donation which I'll gladly do regardless.

I'll also contact APC today to see if they can help me out in any way. I'll get back to you as soon as I get something going. Thanks again for your help!

Just called APC and they told me that unfortunately your part is for a newer model so that's a no go. Thank you very much for helping me out though 🙂

Sorry to hear that about the incompatibility.  On a sad note, I woke up this morning to a dead SMX3000RM2ULUNC.  The "fun" never ends!

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that 😞

What will you replace it with? I didn't know there were so many different models for the 3000v.

Thanks for the kind wishes.  I am in mourning as we speak.  I have a line on a replacement mother board that I will probably try.  I hate throwing perfectly good $2000 items for want of a ten cent part if you know what I mean.

I know how that feels. 2 weeks ago someone broke into our new apartment and stole a bunch of my electronics and clothes. About $3k worth. What upset me the most is that they stole the main board of my Synology RS815+ (I had it on my desk out of the unit) and left the housing unit behind so it's just a big paper weight. Sigh..
