it is hot, as in i can't hold my hand against it for longer than a few seconds.... wanting to make sure this is normal. batteries indicate fully charged, and disconnecting from shore power results in failover to battery (so the thing appears operational).

Hi,

If your batteries are too hot to touch, it means that the deployment conditions of that unit may not be suitable. A raise in temperature will shorten the lifespan of the UPS ( compoments ) and the batteries life.

What I would suggest is to move the unit to a more cooler environment and monitor its internal temperature thru APC software and take steps to keep the environment temperature of the UPS to its operating environment eg below 25 degress Celcius.

What is the model and serial number of the UPS? The batteries that are on the UPS, are they the original ones that came with the unit? When did this problem started? Also, would it be possible for you to open the battery compartment to check its condition, check for signs of swelling, bulging, venting or leaks. Also, see if you can still remove the batteries from the unit itself.
